The Learn to Read Kids Club™ gives parents a literacy-rich program that introduces and reinforces fundamental skills necessary for your child to develop when learning to read. The program combines these literacy skills along with academic concepts and other related learning skills that are important in a child’s overall development.
- Academic Content
By design, the Learn to Read books include academic curriculum content to reinforce your child’s learning in school. Each book cover is color-coded to match its content area.
- Math books cover a wide variety of concepts such as shapes, patterns, time, money, measurement, and adding.
- Science books, your child will learn about topics such as seasons, weather, plants, environmental issues, and transportation.
- Social Studies books will teach your child about such concepts as responsibility, safety, cultural diversity, geography, and the world community.
- Fun & Fantasy books cover basic literacy and developmental concepts such as following directions, rhyming, accomplishing goals, and the importance of reading and writing.
- Phonics
Phonics connects the sounds of language to the written symbols that represent them. Phonics instruction helps children learn the relationships and begin to understand the alphabetic principle—the predictable patterns of written letters and spoken sounds.
- Sight Words
Typical words children encounter frequently in reading and writing are called sight words. While students are learning words daily, sight words can be more difficult for them to retain since they do not always follow letter-sound relationships. In order for children to retain a difficult word, they need many opportunities to experience and manipulate it. Learn to Read books introduce a select number of words so that children gradually gain exposure to the numerous sight words they must learn.
- Vocabulary Words
Children expand their vocabulary indirectly in three ways; through active conversation, through listening to literature that is read to them, and through their own independent reading. The more talking, listening, and reading they do, the larger their vocabulary. The Learn to Read books introduce and reinforce vocabulary words through repetition and reinforcement.
- Related Learning Skills
The Learn to Read Kids Club helps develop academic and literacy skills, as well as, life skills. These skills include drawing conclusions, using picture clues to gather information, recognizing punctuation, using logic to solve problems, recognizing the difference between need and want, understanding the value of exercise, using maps and more!
