Each story introduces fundamental skills your child must develop when learning to read. Those skills include the following: -
Phonics—connects the sounds of language to the written symbols that represent them. Phonics instruction helps children learn the relationships and begin to understand the alphabetic principle—the predictable patterns of written letters and spoken sounds.
- Sight Words—typical words children encounter frequently in reading and writing. While students are learning words daily, sight words can be more difficult for them to retain since these words do not always follow letter-sound relationships. In order for children to retain a difficult word, they need many opportunities to experience and manipulate it.
- Vocabulary Words—children expand their vocabulary indirectly in three ways: through active conversation, through listening to literature that is read to them, and through their own independent reading. The more talking, listening, and reading they do, the larger their vocabulary. The stories in this set introduce and reinforce vocabulary words through repetition and reinforcement.
The readers also provide a related learning skill that children need in their daily life and overall development. |
